History of Butterscotch

Butterscotch is a type of confectionary basically made with boiling sugar syrup, butter, cream and lemon (recipes do vary). There are several theories on the name and origin of the candy. One is its obvious connection to the country of Scotland. Buttery toffee is sometimes called butterscotch. Another that the word Scotch was derived from the word "Scorch."

The word "Butterscotch" was first recorded in Doncaster, a Yorkshire city in England, by Samuel Parkinson who began making candy in 1817. Butterscotch has long been used as great topping on ice cream sundaes as well as a confectionary ingredient. The Boyer Brothers introduced butterscotch as a coating for their peanut buttercup and created Smoothie Cup.

Butterscotch surely has a rich and delicious history, and Boyer Candy Company has inserted themselves into the wonderful world of butterscotch. Boyer Smoothie Cups are a unique take on the classic cup candy that made them popular. Smoothie Cups are the genius combination of crunchy peanut butter and creamy butterscotch, and are as unique as they are delicious. Even better, this delicious butterscotch candy is gluten free, kosher, and made in America.

Since 1936, Boyer Candy Company has been an important powerhouse in candy history, and Smoothie Cups just added to their already unique history. Boyer Candy Company created the very first cup candy in the United States with the Mallo Cup, and then introduced a unique take on the cup candy by replacing chocolate with butterscotch.
